In this week's vlog, I'm calling out a growing problem in the hearing care industry that frankly makes me furious. As more individuals with hearing loss become educated about best practices like Real Ear Measurements (REM), some hearing care professionals are finding themselves in a difficult position. They know they should be performing Real Ear Measurements, but instead of investing the time, training, and equipment necessary to provide proper care, some are choosing a different path: they're lying to their patients. In this video, I discuss a real-world example of a hearing aid user who was told Real Ear Measurements had been performed when they clearly had not. Instead, their provider ran a simple feedback management test and attempted to pass it off as REM. Let me be clear: this isn't a misunderstanding. This isn't a difference of opinion. This is deception. If a hearing care professional knowingly tells a patient that Real Ear Measurements were performed when they weren't, that provider is violating the trust that is essential to patient care. In my opinion, providers who engage in this type of behavior should not be fitting hearing aids, and they should seriously risk losing their professional license. Real Ear Measurements are not some optional luxury service. They are the minimum standard for verifying hearing aid performance and ensuring patients receive the amplification they need. When providers skip this step and then lie about it, patients suffer. If you're investing in hearing aids, you deserve honesty, transparency, and evidence-based care. Anything less is unacceptable.
