Ashley and I secretly traveled to Erlangen, Germany, to visit one of WSA’s major research and development facilities. At the time, we couldn’t tell anyone where we were going or what we were about to see. Now, the secret is finally out. Signia invited us behind the scenes for an early look at the new Signia MaX hearing aid platform, and I became the first audiologist outside the company to learn about the technology. MaX stands for Multi-Adaptive Experience, and Signia is calling it the world’s first multidimensional AI hearing aid platform. Instead of using one deep neural network primarily for noise reduction, Signia MaX uses four task-specific deep neural networks that continuously work together: 🗣️ Real-Time Conversation Enhancement AI locates and enhances multiple conversation partners during dynamic group conversations. 👤 Own Voice Processing AI recognizes when the hearing aid wearer is speaking. 🌎 Ambient Scene Adaptation AI continuously analyzes the acoustic environment instead of simply assigning it to a predetermined listening program. 🔇 Dynamic Noise Control AI evaluates what the noise is, where it is coming from, and whether the wearer is actively participating in a conversation. The new MaX chip reportedly delivers 54 times more processing power than Signia IX, twice the memory, and 50% greater energy efficiency. The first hearing aid built on this platform is the rechargeable Signia Pure Charge&Go MaX. It also features Signia’s new One Connect Technology, supporting Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth LE Audio, telecoil, and Auracast connectivity in a single hearing aid platform. During our visit, we toured Signia’s research labs, learned how its engineers test hearing aids in complex acoustic environments, saw how Bluetooth performance is evaluated, explored the new fitting software, and even experienced Signia MaX inside a challenging listening demonstration. The demonstration was impressive, but manufacturer demonstrations and research claims are only the beginning. The next step is getting Signia MaX back to Arizona, programming it, verifying it, wearing it, and independently testing how well this technology performs in the real world.
