One of the biggest names in the over the counter hearing aid market is winding down its United States operations, and it has forced me to admit something I never expected to say, I was wrong about OTC hearing aids. When the FDA officially created the OTC hearing aid category in 2022, I was a vocal supporter. I believed OTC hearing aids could lower costs, improve access to hearing technology, and ultimately increase hearing aid adoption. But years later, the results tell a very different story. In this video, I break down the five biggest reasons why I believe OTC hearing aids have failed to live up to their promise, including why the wrong consumers are buying them, why the technology has struggled to meet expectations, why the value proposition doesn't make sense, and why the economics of selling hearing aids directly to consumers may have been flawed from the beginning. I also discuss the decision by LXE Hearing, the company behind Eargo, Lexie, and Go Hearing, to wind down its U.S. operations, and what this could mean for the future of OTC hearing aids.
