What does it take to deliver truly exceptional hearing care—and train the next generation of audiologists to do the same? In this vlog, I’m taking you behind the scenes of an action-packed day at Applied Hearing Solutions. We begin with our monthly provider training, where our Doctors of Audiology review real patient cases, evaluate our recommendations and challenge each other to continually improve the care we provide. This month’s discussion centered on a patient who had been struggling to hear with hearing aids purchased at Costco several years ago. After reviewing the consultation and treatment process, I’m happy to report that this patient is now hearing spectacularly. Cases like this reinforce why following comprehensive audiologic Best Practices—and understanding how to clearly communicate their value—is so important. Immediately after training, I head back to the studio to record the very first episode of Ask Dr. Cliff. In this new series, I review real hearing test results, answer questions about hearing loss and help people better understand what they should look for when seeking treatment—even if they never plan to become patients at my clinic. Later, I meet with a concierge functional medicine physician who is interested in referring patients to Applied Hearing Solutions. During our conversation, we unexpectedly discover that we were both deployed to the same area of Iraq at the same time—she with the Army and me with the Marines. We may have been only blocks away from each other without ever knowing it. I also interview a Doctor of Audiology student for a potential 2027–2028 externship at our clinic. Our externship is intentionally demanding. My goal isn’t simply for students to complete their required clinical hours—it is for them to leave with a complete understanding of how to provide an elite level of adult hearing aid treatment, including both what we do and why we do it. Not every student wants that kind of challenge, and our clinic will not be the right fit for everyone. But when someone applies knowing how high our expectations are, that already tells me something important about them. After an incredibly full day, I’m getting a haircut, packing up and heading to Flagstaff—where I’ll continue working because nearly every hearing aid manufacturer apparently decided to launch new technology at the same time.
