Understanding the experience of concurrent hearing impairment and lewy pathology dementias: an interview study

A dispatch from PubMed — filed

Hearing impairment (HI) and dementia often co-exist, however, little is known about the experience of concurrent HI and dementia. Prior literature focuses on all-cause dementia, leaving the experience of HI in Lewy body dementias (LBDs) unknown. This study explored the experience of HI in people with LBDs and carers within the United Kingdom.

Clinical Takeaway

No actionable practice change; this qualitative study surfaces patient experiences that can inform counseling approaches and service design for a largely overlooked population.

Why It Matters

Lewy body dementia patients with hearing loss are rarely studied; understanding their lived experience is a necessary first step toward developing appropriate audiological support pathways.

Key Points
  1. 01Qualitative interview design captures the lived experience of co-occurring hearing loss and Lewy body pathology dementia.
  2. 02This population is underrepresented in existing audiology and dementia literature.
  3. 03Findings can inform person-centered counseling and care pathway design.
  4. 04Published in International Journal of Audiology (2026).
Claims & Evidence

People with concurrent hearing impairment and Lewy body pathology dementias represent an underrepresented population in prior audiology and dementia literature.
