Cortical P1 Latency, Sound Field Audiometry, and Speech Audiometry in Children with Sequential Bilateral Cochlear Implants: A Comparative Pilot Study

A dispatch from PubMed — filed

/Objectives: Objective assessment of auditory rehabilitation in children with cochlear implants (CIs) is challenging, as behavioral tests require cooperation that young children cannot always provide. The P1 component of the cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) is a marker of central auditory maturation, but few studies have compared it directly with behavioral measures in children with sequential bilateral CIs.

Discussion

Signed responses from readers of the wire.

✦ Clinical Takeaway ✦

This is a small pilot study; findings are hypothesis-generating only and do not yet support changes to bilateral cochlear implant fitting or monitoring protocols.

✦ Why It Matters ✦

Understanding how cortical auditory development, functional hearing, and speech outcomes relate in sequentially implanted children could refine candidacy criteria and programming schedules for bilateral cochlear implant programs.

✦ Key Points ✦
  1. 01Pilot study comparing three outcome measures in children with sequential bilateral cochlear implants.
  2. 02Cortical P1 latency used as an electrophysiological marker of auditory cortex maturation.
  3. 03Sound field and speech audiometry assessed functional hearing alongside neural measures.
  4. 04Sequential implantation creates an inter-implant timing variable that may affect cortical development.
  5. 05Small sample size limits generalisability; results are exploratory.
✦ Claims & Evidence ✦

Cortical P1 latency, sound field audiometry, and speech audiometry can be compared as outcome measures in sequentially bilaterally implanted children.
