A digital neurotology history: Characteristics and inter-rater reliability

A dispatch from PubMed — filed

Dizziness is a common presenting symptom that is often misdiagnosed. The first step towards diagnosis of the underlying vestibular disorder is recognition of the vestibular syndrome, after which targeted examination and testing provide the diagnosis. We therefore developed and evaluated a digital history tool to aid clinicians in selecting the correct vestibular syndrome.

Clinical Takeaway

No actionable change yet — the digital neurotology history tool is in early validation; await reliability and accuracy data from larger, more diverse cohorts before adopting it in practice.

Why It Matters

Standardising how vestibular history is captured digitally could reduce missed or delayed diagnoses of dizziness disorders across varied clinical settings.

Key Points
  1. 01Developed a structured digital tool to record patient history for dizziness/vestibular complaints.
  2. 02Primary goal was evaluating inter-rater reliability — i.e., consistency between different clinicians using the same tool.
  3. 03Targets improved recognition and diagnosis of underlying vestibular disorders.
  4. 04Inter-rater reliability is a key psychometric step before clinical deployment.
  5. 05Published in a peer-reviewed otolaryngology journal (DOI: 10.1007/s00405-026-10459-7).
Claims & Evidence
